FCT ACReSAL Project Team Seeks Gwagwalada Council Support for Gully Erosion Control Project
Ahead of the planned commencement of the 3.2 kilometer gully erosion control project in Gwagwalada, the Project Implementation Unit of the Federal Capital Territory Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (FCT ACReSAL) has paid a courtesy visit to the newly elected Area Council Chairman, Hon. Kasim Muhammad, to seek his collaboration and council support.
Leading the team on the visit was the FCT ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Mrs. Caroline Opara, who congratulated the Chairman on his victory. She described the Chairman as a seasoned administrator whose track record of dedicated public service makes him exceptionally suited to lead the council.
"We congratulate you on your well-deserved success at the polls. We were never in doubt that you possess the requisite acumen to provide quality leadership to the people of Gwagwalada," Opara stated.
During her briefing, the Coordinator highlighted some ongoing interventions in the area, particularly the provision of agricultural inputs, which she noted are already yielding significant benefits for local farmers.
"Our post-harvest assessments following the last farming season revealed a marked increase in food production and higher profit margins for local farmers," Mrs. Opara explained. "The feedback from beneficiaries of our tractors and threshers has been encouraging, underscoring ACReSAL’s core
mission of making a lasting impact on community livelihoods."
speaking on the planned civil works, expected to commence before the end of the year, Mrs. Opara explained that the initiative involves comprehensive gully erosion control designed to permanently address the plight of farming communities and property owners along the affected corridor, which stretches approximately 3.2 kilometers.
Allaying concerns among residents along the project corridor, Mrs. Opara disclosed that the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) assessment has been fully completed, which will ensure that all compensation matters are thoroughly addressed before works begin.
"ACReSAL is a community-driven initiative and every intervention we undertake reflects the genuine needs of the people," she emphasized. "Our project team consistently conducts extensive community engagements before any intervention, ensuring community ownership and long-term sustainability."
She further urged the Chairman to build upon the foundation laid by his predecessors by actively supporting ACReSAL initiatives, thereby scaling up the scope and overall impact of environmental interventions across the Area Council.
In his response, the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Hon. Kasim Muhammad, assured the ACReSAL team of the Council’s full preparedness to support the project.
He commended the FCT ACReSAL team for prioritizing Gwagwalada for these high-impact interventions, reiterating that the protection of lives, public infrastructure, and agricultural lands remains a top priority for his administration.
"I am truly excited by your interventions. Prior to this, the Area Council did not have a single operational tractor. Thanks to the ACReSAL project, our farmers, who make up the vast majority of our population can now access one"
