Landscapes restoration and climate resilience for Northern Nigeria and the FCT.
Agro–Climatic Resilience In Semi–Arid Landscapes | A World Bank Supported Project
The acronym “ACReSAL” stands for Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes. It is a World Bank assisted Project aimed at addressing the challenges of land degradation and climate change in Northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on a multi-dimensional scale.
It has the clear objective of addressing environmental challenges arising from climate change and poor land management practices while advocating for strong practices and policies on ecological restoration.
The Federal Ministry of Environment is the lead implementing ministry for the project, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS).
The Project Development Objective (PDO) of ACReSAL is to increase the implementation of sustainable landscapes management practices in targeted watersheds in northern Nigeria and strengthen Nigeria's long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management.
Component A focus on large-scale restoration.
Component B empowering local climates.
Component C building management capacity.
Component D contingent rapid intervention.
A State Steering Committee (SSC) and State Technical Committee (STC) provide the overall policy and technical guidance respectively. The SSC in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is chaired by the Honourable Minister of State with membership drawn from the Agriculture & Rural Development Secretariat, FCT Water Board, and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA); the Project Coordinator serves as the Secretary.
The STC is chaired by the Mandate Secretary, ARDS, with membership from technical Departments, FCDA, Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), RUWASSA, Director URP, and Treasury.
The State Project Management Unit (SPMU), headed by the State Project Coordinator, is responsible for the overall supervisory activities of the Project, ensuring seamless execution across the territory.
At the community level, a Local Government Project Management Committee (LGPMC) chaired by the Area Council Chairmen supports inclusive participation and promotes local ownership of project activities.
The Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) is responsible for the overall supervisory activities at the national level, headed by the National Project Coordinator with support from MDAs.
