FCT ACReSAL Project Launches Young Foresters Club at Pukafa Primary School, flags off Tree planting 0.8-Hectare school land.
The Federal Capital Territory Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (FCT ACReSAL) project has extended its environmental campaign to Pukafa Primary School with the establishment of a Young Foresters Club and the planting of trees on 0.8 hectares of school land.
Speaking at the event, the Project Coordinator of FCT ACReSAL, Mrs. Caroline Opara, reaffirmed the project's commitment to environmental restoration, climate change mitigation and community empowerment, emphasizing that youth play a pivotal role in sustaining these efforts.
Mrs. Opara noted that while ACReSAL has previously delivered critical infrastructure and agricultural interventions to the Pukafa community such as boreholes, waste management facilities, the Community Revolving Fund (CRF), and agricultural inputs, reversing environmental degradation remains central to ACReSAL's objectives.
Highlighting the visible impacts of deforestation driven by charcoal production in the area, she stressed the need for a mindset shift by engaging the younger generation in sustainable practices.
"In line with the slogan of the ACReSAL project, ‘Greening the Environment, Saving Lives,’ we want to capture the interest of the younger generation by raising their awareness of the vital importance of trees in our ecosystem," Mrs. Opara said.
In his remarks, the Head Teacher of the school, Mr. Saidu Muhammad expressed appreciation for the intervention and assured that concrete measures would be put in place to protect the new saplings.
"We thank God for bringing this tree planting initiative to our school and appreciate ACReSAL for providing these seedlings," Mr. Saidu said. "We will put security measures in place to safeguard these trees because we believe they will benefit both our school and the entire Pukafa community."
Demonstrating strong community acceptance and ownership of the initiative, the event was well attended by 12 community chiefs.
The event concluded with a ceremonial planting session, where the ACReSAL project team, school management, and students planted a variety of tree species across the designated 0.8-hectare site.
