FCT ACReSAL Inaugurates PES Core Team, Steps Down Training for PIU
The Federal Capital Territory Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, FCT ACReSAL, Project has inaugurated a Core Team and conducted a step-down training for members of the Project Implementation Unit PIU, to drive the implementation of the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiative in the FCT.
The FCT ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Mrs. Caroline Opara, said the inauguration of the team and the step-down training were part of the agreed actions from the ACReSAL Project PES mission held in Yola, Adamawa State, where states were urged to constitute PES committees and cascade the training.
She noted that PES is an innovative climate finance mechanism designed to provide direct financial incentives to landowners and land users who adopt sustainable land management practices that enhance vital ecological services such as carbon sequestration, watershed protection, and biodiversity conservation.
“When land users, particularly farmers, are encouraged and supported, they will sustain environmentally friendly practices that benefit both people and the environment,” Mrs. Opara said.
She added that “PES will greatly assist in achieving ACReSAL’s Project Development Objective to promote climate resilience, restore degraded lands, and improve livelihoods”.
Mrs. Opara urged the Core Team to deploy their expertise to ensure the objectives of the initiative are met and that participation is inclusive across the FCT.
Mr. Kayode Sanni, the Agricultural Officer of the project, who is the Focal Person for the FCT PES initiative, while anchoring the step-down training, delivered a technical presentation outlining the PES framework. He described it as a reward system for communities protecting the environment.
He explained that farmers practicing conservation agriculture, agroforestry, silvopastoral systems, and other sustainable land management practices, stand to benefit more from the scheme.
He revealed that the Core Team will proceed to identify and sensitise potential beneficiaries across the six Area Councils of the FCT to ensure inclusive participation and in line with ACReSAL Project's community-driven approach.
