The Provost of the College of Education, in the Federal Capital Territory {FCT) Zuba Dr. Sule Mundi has pledged the institution’s support for the land restoration initiatives of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project in the FCT.
Dr. Mundi made this commitment during a meeting with members of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) led by the Project Coordinator of the FCT ACReSAL Mrs. Caroline Opara which took place at the permanent site of the College at Zuba.
Describing the land restoration initiative as strategic in addressing and reversing the impact of climate change, he expressed the strong desire of the College to partner with ACReSAL noting that with over 200 hectares of land at their disposal, the college is well-positioned to contribute significantly to the project.
On the educational benefits of the initiative, the Provost expressed hope that the initiative would serve as an exceptional learning opportunity for the students in the Department of Forestry to deepen their knowledge in global best practices in forest management.
He promised to constitute an Inter-departmental Committee to look into how best the institution can key into the initiative.
In her address, the Project Coordinator, FCT ACReSAL, Mrs. Caroline Opara., provided an insightful summary of the Project Development Objectives (PDO) of ACReSAL.
She disclosed that the visit was in furtherance of the institutional strengthening approach of ACReSAL, which seeks to enlist the support of stakeholders in enhancing community resilience against climate change and improving the livelihoods of local communities. In her words of Opara, “the FCT ACReSAL is integrating academic institutions because of the availability of large expanse of land which we believe speaks to the project of reclaiming land for more productive and beneficial uses. Already we have secured the consent of the university to restore over 1,000 hectares of land in the university. We are hoping to be adding to that figure with your Institution”.
